Charlotte, North Carolina has some of the best public and private schools in the state. Its public school district, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, is the second largest school system in North Carolina with nearly 150,000 students enrolled at its 168 schools. It serves students in both the city of Charlotte and the suburbs in Mecklenburg County.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has a total of 168 schools, with 91 elementary schools, 30 middle schools, and 31 high schools. These high schools are considered the best by US News & World Report.

Information About Getting to School

After you've picked the best school, you can learn where the nearest bus stops are and when each school starts. With so many schools, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district relies on later start times to allow one bus to serve multiple schools. 

Bell Schedules

With the exception of Cato Middle College High School (which starts at 11:20 AM), Charlotte's public schools start classes between 7:15 AM and 9:15 AM, dismissing in the early to mid-afternoon. You can view a list of start and end times by school here.

Bus Stop Information

During the second week of August, bus information will be distributed for the upcoming school year. If you have a question about bus schedules when moving to your new home, you can call the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student placement office at 980-343-5335.
